just got some boards and am in process of setting up a system, how do I get access to participants area to get software and do initial setup testing?

If you haven't found it already, go to the WXFORUM for detailed step-by-step build documentation for your RED kit(s). Make certain you select the correct document for your particular system. On the current RED build document, go to page 27 under the STM32FDISCOVERY BOARD FIRMWARE INSTALLATION section for instructions on getting an account ID.
