LightningMaps.org having issues? - piepants - 2016-09-24
LightningMaps.org seems a bit flaky today, it's not showing any signals and there's gaps appearing in the graphs. Seems to be affecting more than one region too (I checked Oceanic and Europe). Is this a known bug? Thanks

The problem is not directly related to LightningMaps. Since two days there are sporadic minor connection problems between the servers. Maybe a DoS attack in the same network segment...

It looks like maybe there is something else also. Reviewing the java console as indicated in the error message on the page, I find the following messages.
Google Maps API warning: RetiredVersion https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/error-messages#retired-version"util.js:221:12

Google Maps now requires an API key to use it. The free period ended yesterday, October 12th. Anyone who uses Google Maps must have a key now.

The problem is known. It's not the API key. Unfortunately it can take up to a week until there's a solution from Google. We might also switch to other map services, like OpenStreetmap. But this will take some longer time.

Hi,
I am getting the same problem since yesterday evening. You might be able to register a new key if it has expired. If it just the number of page loads then Google might want you to buy a key.

The error message is pretty clear, the site is over its daily quota and yes I expect Google will want money to up the quota. Having said that Google can be very fair and supportative of non-commercial, non-profit organisations.
Maps are working for me on my (private) installation of MyLightningDetection version: 1.4-dev6. I jumped through the google hoops to get an API key a few days ago. Straight forward instructions for that are in post in these forums, somewhere.
