How are lightning strikes detected so that they can be displayed on maps online?
I've seen the UK Met Office display maps showing lightning strikes, and I sometimes use when there's a thunderstorm nearby. How are the lightning strikes so accurately displayed? It looks like they're tracked by stations around the country, but how do these stations detect lightning strikes, sometimes many many miles away?
