  Questions. Mountains and Antennas
Posted by: Mike6158 - 2017-05-05, 13:04 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (4)

Antennas- My Blue seems to be working great but I was wondering if I should be using the E-field antenna with the H-Field antenna. At the moment all I use is the H-Field.

Mountains- I may be moving to Durango, CO in a few months (current system will remain here if I can get another Blue). Do mountains pose a problem for receiving signals?

  Web Page Real-Time Updates
Posted by: jkrob - 2017-05-04, 17:01 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (6)

All,

New to the forum but long time user of the Lightningmaps.org website. I have noticed, where I work, the lightningmaps.org page will show dynamic, real-time updates of flashes but the en.blitzortung.org page does not. It only does a full page refresh every minute. Are there different internet data flow requirements (firewall access, PC/browser setup, etc.) between the two pages? What does it take to make the en.blitzortung.org show real-time flashes like it does at my home PC?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

  thanks for the project
Posted by: bobby mcconnell - 2017-04-30, 17:04 - Forum: General Discussion - No Replies

Thank you for the project.  I have a sensitive 11yr old daughter that has been both fascinated with weather and astronomy.  The live maps have helped her understand and feel more secure when storms run through our area. We have used the live map on the tv via chromecast to keep an eye on when things are getting close so they are not as much as a surprise.

Its a really neat way of "seeing" the lightning via RF and triangulation.  It some what ties into the idea of how geocaching works so it was easier for her to understand.

She would like to become a contributor to the network even though she fully understands our lone detector would not be a huge advantage to us as an individual but would make the network better in our area.

Keep up the good work.

How do I find the status page in the controller so I can get the "Device ID"  and then log in and get an account?

  Interference mode notification needed
Posted by: cbhiii - 2017-04-27, 01:59 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - No Replies

I'm trying to track down an intermittent interferer that is being picked up by my H-field antennas.

The trouble is that I have no way to be notified that the interference has return unless I just happen to be by the unit or logged into the units webpage.

Am I overlooking a was of having the unit notify me somehow so I can know when to start my troubleshooting?

E-Field Antenna and 60 Hz power lines
Posted by: waysta - 2017-04-24, 20:14 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (4)

Thinking about antennas, before I have the system:

How far away from the top power line (residential street HV to the pole transformer) do I need to be?  How much 60 Hz rejection does the Blue system have?

  national radio quiet zone site
Posted by: davidsaroff - 2017-04-24, 18:19 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (3)

I will build a system and operate it in the US national radio quiet zone that includes the Green Bank radio telescope observatory, in Green Bank, West Virginia. The data stream will be made available to the astronomers using the telescope, and to the operators of the telescope through the observatory data taking system. Astronomers will use the data to help excise terrestrial noise and interference. The operators will use it to enhance the safety of the telescope. I am a retired Silicon Valley chip designer and radio designer, now working in radio astronomy. When can I tell the observatory I may be receiving a kit?

  Shield the E-probe?
Posted by: Max_Headroom - 2017-04-22, 14:54 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (12)

Gentlemen & members!

Judging from my question, it will be evident I have a very dim view of antenna theory, so pls be gentle...

I live on the top floor of a high rise with a great view of my city.
I plan to place both the ferrite antennas & E-probe on the balconny.

However, living as I do, I assume there is plenty of sources of interference coming from lower floors.

Question: is it possible to build a shielding around the probe in the (potentially) offending sectors?

Earlier today my station ID appeared here.  Now it doesn't

Ideas anyone?
