Powerful lightning produce sferics that can easily detected thousands of kilometers away. The TOA algorithm of Lightningmaps.org doesn't have any parameters regarding different regions. For historical reasons the density of stations in Europe is much higher than in other regions, so weaker lightning strokes can be detected there which can not be received by the stations in USA anymore.
