Use of historic data for informative project
Posted by: piemonkey - 2021-07-12, 14:48 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - No Replies

I attend an event (well, I used to when it could happen, and will again after covid), which takes place in an area with regular storms with a lot of lightning. Measures are taken to ensure safety from the lightning strikes, but many people at the event don't follow them. I'd love to be able to use the past data of strikes for the area to demonstrate that the chances of a strike occurring nearby are high. Unless the cost of the parts for a detector falls significantly, I'm unfortunately not in a position to participate in data collection at the moment unfortunately.

How do I set it to my home location? It seems to randomly appear in different locations.

System Red for sale. Solgt / Sold
Posted by: Einar - 2021-07-05, 20:18 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (1)

I prefer to sell to a user in Norway, so therefore I present it in Norwegian. If no norwegian buyer emerge, I will relist in english.

Gi bud!

  Blue e-field antenna question
Posted by: llowrey - 2021-07-05, 18:40 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (2)

Hello,

The documentation for the Blue kit indicates that one can use the 'built-in' antenna and includes a photo of the PCB with the rectangular section opposite the antenna screw terminal, and labeled 'Probe / Antenna' below, still attached. That rectangular section is not electrically connected to the e-field board.

[attachment=4491]

It's been 25+ years since my coursework in electromagnetics so I'm a bit ignorant at this point. Is that separate rectangular section coupled in some way even though it is not electrically connected?

What, exactly, is the 'built-in' antenna?

Is it preferred to use a wire instead of the 'built-in' antenna?

System Blue for sale from Canada SOLD
Posted by: jatwood2000 - 2021-06-29, 04:31 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (1)

System Blue (station 2488) for sale.  Assembled from kit in May 2019.  View online to confirm it is in working order.
Selling it because I will be moving and will not be able to set up the antennae in the new location.

The sale includes:

    System Blue
    Aluminium Blitzortung Housing.
Two ferrite rods supplied by Blitzortung and housed in a right-angle PVC pipe.
E-Field PCB in a makeshift pill-bottle container (you will probably want to improve this part).
GPS Receiver and antenna with magnetic base, outside rated with cable.
    5V USB Power Supply

Photos available upon request.  Asking $500 USD plus shipping from Alberta, Canada.  Reasonable offers considered.
Payment by Paypal or email transfer.
Preference given to buyer in this region as it would be good to continue coverage in this area.
Contact directly at westurner1975@gmail.com and expect a response within 2-3 days.  If you give me your shipping address I will provide a shipping quote.

  Collaboration with PRedictWind.com
Posted by: jbungener - 2021-06-23, 14:34 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (4)

Hello,

My name is Jim Bungener, I work for a weather forecasting website called Predictwind.com.
one of the services we do is to install wind sensors in various areas where people want to have better wind sensing.
We work with communities, towns, private individuals etc... to install as many wind sensors as we can.
These are not simple off the shelf "weather stations" these are purpose built, rugged stations that we install in some of the most treacherous conditions (sea spray, rain, sand etc...) and expect to work for years to come.
We would like to add your Lightning sensors to our package so that we measure more then just wind.

Who should I get in touch with to discuss how we should make this happen.

Thank you

JB

Bolts not seen on live map
Posted by: Zonker - 2021-06-21, 21:07 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (6)

I live in the south of France near to loose, sorry, Toulouse and tonite, while bombarded by mainly horizontal bolts, not vertical that strike I mean, there was no sign of all of those bolts on the live map, vector map,,,as if it wasn't recorded by the system. I saw that there aren;t many spots around here so I consider installing a blue system in the future...
If someone has an explanation to that...
Best

  Signal recording possibility?
Posted by: kaklik - 2021-06-14, 17:08 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (2)

Hello,

is there some option to record raw signal samples from system Blue?  We want to use the blitzortung station as trigger unit for other devices onboard the storm chasing cars.

For now, we have the system Blue station installed on board of the car as a mobile device. It seems the station could be relatively effectively used for waveform visualization in "monitor" mode. But it could not be used for scientific analysis until we have the raw signal waveforms of each lightning.

We are especially interested in the "nearby lightning" e.g. up to 20km from the car. I suspect the range could be partially selected by altering the gain.

As a partial solution to the signal recording, we tried to sniff the UDP packets sent to the servers. But unfortunately, the signals seem to be filtered and only a portion of detected signals are really sent to the servers.
