Journalism student looking for cool science
Posted by: saimamaysidik@gmail.com - 2020-08-13, 13:23 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

Hello lightning enthusiasts! I'm a journalism student in MIT's Graduate Program for Science Writing, and I'm doing preliminary research to find cool science to write about while I'm in this program. I think Blitzortung and lightningmaps.org are really neat, and I'm wondering if anyone would like to give me some background info on these projects. How did they get started? What motivates members to participate? I read here that Blitzortung was used to pinpoint the origin of a forest fire in Australia. How else have the data been used?

Thank you everyone!

Saima

Question Purple Rain Radar Signature?
Posted by: silhouex - 2020-07-10, 09:00 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (6)

Hey folks,
been using the lightningmaps site for a few years now. However just tonight I saw a large purple "cloud". I've never seen this before is this a really thick cloud? Noteable the image vanished in the few minutes it took me to discover this forum. Clouds don't just vanish right? I'm pretty sure this was somewhere over the southwestern states.
I should point out that this was at night. I know weather radar isn't as reliable at night. Also, not saying it was but the purple cloud had a shape you would expect from a splash or an explosion.

Are their any other colors I might see other than green, yellow, red, pink and white?
Is there a "legend" somewhere for the lightningmaps site?

Thank you all for your replies.

edit: Interestingly the same thing happened in the same general region, tonight. I managed to get a screen shot before it disappeared. Leaning more towards some kind of error?

edit 2: Added 2nd image showing the same place moments after posting. The signature is gone again.

  HomeAssistant extension
Posted by: mrk - 2020-07-02, 21:30 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (2)

Hello!
Any HomeAssistant users here? I've just created custom component for HomeAssistant: https://github.com/mrk-its/homeassistant-blitzortung It monitors for lightnings in given area  and provides realtime sensors with distance / azimuth / ligntning count. I try to comply with data usage rules at http://en.blitzortung.org/contact.php#contribution_7 - for example end users connect  through proxy mqtt service, so only single websocket connection to Blitzortung server is required.
Let me know what do you think about, thanks!

Location does not exist on CYA page
Posted by: daftpunk - 2020-06-27, 14:53 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Hi all,

I find this project interesting and wondered if my location is suitable to be considered for a detector? Unfortunately I can't accurately sign up using the form on the "cover your area" (CYA) page as I am not listed. I live on the island of Guernsey in the Channel Islands, between England and France. The Lat and Long are 49.4482° N, 2.5895° W .

Any advice on how to proceed would be great!

Thanks

How to set city and country 2725
Posted by: EnarGustafsson - 2020-06-23, 19:47 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

I did not manage to set city and country, is it done internally in the detector or externally on the web? I once got into these settings along with settings for types of antennae. Filled in the values ands saved them, but they did not turn up in the map. Cannot get back to the site where I am supposed to register the data.

I am also not able to log in to the forum for participants.

Hi folks,

just want to know whether I can be contributor for blitzortung.org without having special hardware (difficult to get atm?) say by means of donations?
I would like to get and analyze some historical lightning data around my place...  Lightning  Huh
And, of course, I want to help the project!  Heart

Sad Interference
Posted by: fweens - 2020-06-21, 16:43 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Hi there,

I received a RED station a couple of weeks ago and tried it in a big city (Paris) and it was working very well.

I moved the station to where it's supposed to stay, in the south west of France and I have a lof of interferences and I don't understand why...

I'd like to keep it in automatic to detect close and far lightnings.

Could some one help me adjusting the settings ?

Best,
Franck
