LMO URL drops "Archive by day"?
Posted by: stixpjr - 2021-02-25, 01:20 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - No Replies

I was trying to "deep link" to a couple of lighting strikes on a particular day that likely happened to blow up a telephone line surge protector - and I find that the "Archive by day" selection in the "ar" and/or "as" URL parameters appear to be ignored?

This is easy to replicate; view a specific day (2020-10-30 was the day I'm interested in, for the greater Sydney region), copy and paste the URL, and you'll find the view resets to a 1hr realtime view. Tested on Firefox and Chrome, with the same behavior.

Hi there.

just looking at the UK station list here:

https://www.blitzortung.org/en/station_l...t_rows=100

I noticed a number of stations are listed as UK Country but 2-4 times in different Regions. is this a known bug?

How to get alerts of fault or missing GPS
Posted by: jchonig - 2020-12-30, 17:27 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (2)

I'd like a progmatic way of finding out if my System BLUE is having issues.   Such as a fault, or GPS not working.

Is there a way to query the device for status so I could generate an e-mail from a script?

Before I go and start parsing the HTML, is there an easier way?

Thanks.

Jeff

  Power via POE Splitter
Posted by: jchonig - 2020-12-24, 14:01 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (6)

Has anyone tried powering a System BLUE via a POE (802.3af or 802.3at) splitter?

Since I have a POE capable switching, this seems like a good option to simplify the wiring.

Thanks.

Jeff

  Question on lightning.
Posted by: kalyubave92 - 2020-12-16, 16:28 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (1)

Has anyone on here ever had their tent struck by lightning? If so, what happens? Does it ravage the tent? Were you okay inside and the tent poles channeled the electricity into the ground? Or are you pretty much toast if your tent gets struck with you in it?
I’m curious. Last weekend I got caught in a wicked thunderstorm that seemed to strike very close to my tent. I was on top of a barren plateau so the tent was one of the taller objects around. I minimized my space and stayed on my sleeping pad for insulation, but was still terrified until the storm passed. What is proper protocol in this situation?Note: Link removed by Admin

How "wide" is a bolt of lightning?
Posted by: lokaupdes34 - 2020-12-16, 16:11 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

It seems like when you see clips of lightning striking in the American Midwest, the lightning is far away and appears to be fairly large in width given the distance from the camera. And then when you see clips of a tree that is 20 feet away getting struck, the bolts of lightning appear about the same width as those that could be miles away.
So my question is, is the apparent similarity in width between distant bolts and close bolts just a coincidence or a case of selective memory on my part? And most importantly, on average, how "wide" is a bolt of lightning?

  Logging in problem

Registered a couple of days ago.  Cannot log-in from opening page, get the error message that I am not registered.  If I go to the email I received with the URL link, I am told there is no need as I am already registered.  If I go to the 'Log In' button on that page, I am logged in.  I am confused  Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Data access for bushfire research project
Posted by: ryanstocks00 - 2020-12-15, 12:37 - Forum: General Discussion - No Replies

Hi All,

I am new to the forum but have been using the lightning maps for a while out of personal interest. I am now working on a research project as part of the bushfire initiative at the Australian National University in which we are modelling the potential use of drones to quickly scan recent lightning strikes for potential ignitions to allow for early suppression of any ignitions in bushfire prone areas. It would be amazingly helpful to be able to access the historical data that you have collected in order to provide realistic scenarios for this modelling. Is there any chance that this would be possible? It would be entirely non-commercial and we would be more than happy to reference the source Smile

Many thanks,

Ryan
