  How close is too close?
Posted by: Dale.Reid - 2016-09-22, 11:17 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (5)

We are having an unusual amount of rain and storms with a lot of lightning yesterday and today here in Wisconsin, in the upper midwest of the USA.  The 'train' effect of a stationary positioned front with a lot of energy from the south is positioned so wave after wave of some pretty hot cells has moved over me one right after another.  Usually there is a pause of about 30 to 60 minutes and then along comes another one.

Rain total is now 5.51", with more expected.  Too wet.

But the position of the storm train across my location has provided many cells with lots of cloud to ground lightning to watch.  It is interesting that the main path is about ten miles south of me, although some move by over me, too.

One thing I noticed is that my station's data is used for strike plots up to about 3 to 5 miles away, but anything closer than that shows no participation and many other stations' data used to plot the strike.  This was very consistent all afternoon and evening as I watched.

I wonder if the algorithms screen out extremely close strikes, with some sort of physics being that super close strikes are not well captured with the stations?

Just curious if anyone has had their station participate in calculating strikes just a few miles or even less?

Oh, the expanding circles for predicting the onset of thunder was very easy to evaluate with hundreds  of chances to watch the circle touch my station and the thunder, if heard, was amazingly close in timing to the estimate provided by the circle.  Very nice.

Bug Location marker not working?
Posted by: Arceushera - 2016-09-17, 01:51 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (4)

Okay, so I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows 10, and when I try to use the location marker, it does nothing on Chrome, and just turns blue on Microsoft Edge, no marker. This has been happening for MONTHS on different WiFi networks, public, mobile hotspots, private, etc., but to no avail. I didn't report it, hoping it was temporary. I am certain that the laptop has the ability to be located, and I've allowed the site explicit permission to use my location. Plz help me.

Posted by: MuellerJ - 2016-09-16, 09:17 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Hi Guys,

i had System Green PCB 6 Version 3 Firmware 22 running
GPS Grarmin 35 LVS

I moved the Station into another room and had to extend gps wires

Everything looks good but Windows Tracker is Stuck at Reinitialize GPS (20)

I receive the GPS Data but Windows tracker keeps logging

Any ideas ?

Edit: I noticed that the date from the GPS seems to be wrong indeed: 31.01.1997 (why that??)

Hallo,

Today suddenly firefox started reporting:

This site uses HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) to specify that Firefox only connect to it securely. As a result, it is not possible to add an exception for this certificate.

www.lightningmaps.org uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate expired on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 1:03 PM. The current time is Thursday, September 15, 2016 12:16 AM. Error code: SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_CERTIFICATE

P.S.
Yes my computer time & time zone was verified and sync'd

Additionally Internet explorer also displays the same error but allows to continue with error, Chrome does not show the error but also does show location.

When I am looking at the lightning data on the web, what do the green lines mean that flash up when a lightning strike is detected? Am very interested in this area of weather and am thinking about looking into getting a detector and becoming part of the service, if that is available.

Thanks

Jay

  System Blue - Early Integration
Posted by: pjb01 - 2016-09-13, 17:22 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Hi all,

A few notes on the integration approach I used for System Blue - congrats to the team for a great solution with some powerful/easy to use built-in tools to get up and running quickly (particularly the Signals page with noise floor checkbox/noise floor p-p measurements)

H-field:

Started with manual control and E-field input disabled - gain at minimum on 1A and 1B (no 1C connected). Gradually increased the gain while finding optimum antenna placement, rotating the antenna to identify directions of noise sources. After some time I found a location where the noise spikes on the red channel were the only real interference - based on other postings I understand these are generated by the controller and were significantly improved by switching off the HP filter. During early testing I was plagued by significant interference at 120/s (related to TV/dimmer switch 60Hz) but only in the relatively near field.

E-field:

Same approach - manual control with H-field inputs disabled - gain at minimum on 2A. Gradually increased gain while finding a relatively quiet place for the antenna. Grounding the controller board to electrical ground (copper water pipe) improved performance, but the biggest gain was realized by using a dedicated copper grounding rod pushed into the ground.

A couple of questions:

1. I notice that running in Automatic mode dials back the gains significantly from what I can accomplish in manual mode with minimal interference. This is the opposite of what I found during early testing, where the system would get caught in a cycle of automatically increasing gain until it entered interference mode, and then significantly back off the gain (repeats). I assumed that the goal would be to get the max sensitivity from all stations without entering interference mode, but this does not appear to be the case (perhaps based on the increased density of stations)? What is the goal of the algorithm?

2. During testing I had a number of occasions where the controller would stop responding - seemingly related to burst mode interference. External pings would fail, the GPS LED would extinguish and the network LED would remain on despite the network cable being unplugged. Although the problem does not appear to occur during normal (non-interference) operation, I would have expected the watchdog to restart the controller in this scenario. Any ideas for further troubleshooting?

Thanks,
Peter
