  Uploading Firmware! Please wait...
Posted by: Tecsol - 2018-01-19, 07:32 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (2)

Hi,
I have a mystery trying to flash new firmware to my Red system. (Station 1323)
The LCD display reports I am running 7.4, and that 8.4 is availalbe. I have downloaded 8.4 via the button on the web interface, and this file is stored on my local computer. After pressing upload, the page is stuck showing"Uploading Firmware! Please wait..." Half an hour later, I refresh or select another web tab. I rebooted the detector. There was no other sign of the firmware actually being written to the system, and no checksums displayed.
The web interface now shows I am running 8.4 (even after connecting in from a different computer and browser), but the LCD still says 7.4!  The station information shown by Lightningmaps.org also shows firmware 7.4.
Any suggestions appreciated!
Cheers,
James Dean

  Time settings in email alerts

Hello all,
I have email alerts active and wonder about the time stamp tat
Is given in the mail. It seems that the system reports about
Lightning that occurs outside the "examined" window.
How can that occur?
Example  below.

Cheers
Rainer

Housing for System Blue (laser cut/3d print)
Posted by: higherperspective - 2018-01-08, 01:13 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (35)

Hi all.

Just got my System Blue built and ready for use, however, I currently don't have a housing for the unit.

I have a laser cutter and access to a 3D printer.

Are there any laser cut files (I will make out of acrylic) or 3D print files available for System Blue so I can make my own housing?

If so, could you please point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

How reset user and password System Blue
Posted by: meteopedara - 2018-01-07, 21:02 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Hello to all. Unfortunately due to health problems I had to abandon the blue system for a while. Now I'm trying to start over but I can not remember any more user and password to access his web page. Can someone help me reset to log in again? What are user and factory password?

Lightning animation and map during year 2017
Posted by: RongeLuk - 2018-01-04, 21:26 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (6)

Hello,

I have made some (maybe) interesting maps and animation from Blitzortung.org data during year 2017 over Europe.

First is timelapse movie of 90 minute strikes Lightning  history with 10 minute step.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYBtcutYefQ&hd=1

Second is GIF animation of monthly merged lightning strikes into European map.

GPS troubles with my blue box
Posted by: hazet_CHAM - 2017-12-28, 15:53 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (3)

Hello
since a few hours my blue sys can't find any satellites. The blue GPS indicator on the frontside illuminates for approx. 1 sec, the pauses for approx. 2 sec.
No PPS pulse. Antenna device is MEDIATEK. Any hints what is going wrong here? Had the same troubles already some weeks ago but they disappeared suddenly.
Cheers
Hans

Chaos Computer Club Congress meetup (34C3)
Posted by: namaste - 2017-12-26, 21:30 - Forum: General Discussion - No Replies

Hey there,

Reasonably new participant to the blitzortung project here.
I've got two stations. one that I will be bringing to Nepal if all goes well; the other will stay hosted in Amsterdam.

From tomorrow till the beginning of the 31st of Dec, i'll be at 34C3, the yearly conference of the CCC germany that'll be in Leipzig this year.

If there's anyone that'd want to meet up there; come look for 'Justa' somewhere around the HSNL/Techinc assemblies.
I'm also bringing a fridge with home-brewed beer; so that might also be an extra incentive to come meet up.

You can also , of course, drop a private message here; i'll try to look from time to time.

Perhaps see some (other) participants or tech-heads of the project, there.

Several questions about the circuit protection that using linear power supplies
Posted by: Jand - 2017-12-22, 04:00 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (3)

This is a two-part question:

  •  Why do so many projects that I see are using basic linear transformer power supplies (i.e., mains->transformer->rectifier->regulator) but not have any kind of input protection beyond a fuse? Is a fuse really going to help prevent damage to the circuit? Are they assuming that it's going to be plugged into a surge protector, so it doesn't need to worry about excessive input voltage?
  •  If it is a good idea to include more protection in a simple power supply, is a simple crowbar-type arrangement like this appropriate?

My thought process was that I just want the fuse to open and the whole thing to become inactive if anything goes out of spec, so during an overvoltage, I basically just want to short-circuit and blow the fuse. The rule of thumb that I have heard is that your device should be able to tolerate during normal operation anywhere between 100-140 volts from a 115v nominal mains supply. This means a peak AC voltage of ~198, hence the 200v TVS diodes. The clamping voltage of common 200v TVS diodes(http://www.kynix.com/Product/Cate/109.html) seems to be in the 320-330v range, so a 300v gas discharge tube was chosen to take up the larger surges a little bit before the diodes reach their limit. Anything more than the GDT can handle would probably just arc across the component leads and trip the mains circuit breaker or blow the power supply's fuse instantaneously, right?

Is this enough? Should I also fuse the mains neutral and use a lower voltage TVS diode for D2 in order to open the circuit in the case of reversed hot and neutral? It seems like it might be over doing it to try to protect against grossly incorrect mains wiring like that. Also, now I'm starting to ask myself if it isn't even more dangerous to risk opening the neutral side of the circuit before the hot side fuse blows...
