The pre-wound ferrites that came with my Blue kit all have a small loose knot tied in one of the two wires.

What is the significance of this?
Should this be connected to a certain pin of the pre-amp?

Can the H-field pre-amplifier PCB be placed 'inside' the loops of a 3-loop H-field antenna?

Ich bin neu dabei und wollte kurz mal "hallo!" sagen und anschließend eine Frage stellen.

Letzte Woche habe ich mein Paket mit dem Material des Blue-Systems erhalten.
Das Zusammenlöten war für mich als gelernter Elektroniker kein Problem und hat echt Spaß gemacht.
Nur der Einbau in das mitbestellte Gehäuse war etwas kniffelig, da die LEDs natürlich ordentlich in der Front sitzen sollen.

Die Aktualisierung der Firmware war kein Problem und dank der ausführlichen Anleitung hatte ich keine Problem die Station 1683 ans Netz zu bringen.

Für Interessierte:  - Ich verwende die hier im Forum oft empfohlene  "GPS-Antenne SMA 90° (abgewinkelt) Magnetfuß", bestellt über amazon. Bisher bin ich für den Preis von unter 9Euro voll zufrieden.

                            - Als USB-Netzteil verwende ich das alte Ladegerät meines Nokia-Handys ;  ich bin sehr skeptisch gegenüber den China-Billigteilen auch wenn namhafte Hersteller dort auch produzieren lassen

                            - Ich habe mir eine Loop-Antenne aus Koax-Kabel gebaut, mit 1m Durchmesser und durch die Schirm-Innenleiter-Verbindung 4 Windungen

                            - Ich überlege zusätzlich zwei Ferritantennen im 90°-Versatz mit einzubinden

                            -  An den E-Feld-Empfänger habe ich ein Stück 1,5mm² Kupferkabel angeschlossen ; <-- Wahnsinn, dass man über ein kurzes Stück Draht etwas empfangen kann

                            - die Netwerkanbindung erfolgt über  Patchkabel ---> WLAN-Repeater ---> Router ---> Internet



Abschließend hätte ich noch eine Frage an die anderen Blue-System-Nutzer;

Wie kann ich das System vernünftig erden? Gibt es auf der Platine einen vorgesehenen Punkt zum Anschluss des Erdpotentials, welchen ich ggf. herausführen kann?
Da die Platine ja lediglich ins Gehäuse eingeschoben ist, wird ja ein einfacher Anschluss ans Gehäuse unsinnig sein.
Oder reicht es am vorgesehenen Erdungspunkt der Vorverstärkerplatine die Antenne zu erden?
Derzeit habe ich einen (vermutlich) ziemlich hohen Noise-Floor von 125 mVpp.

I'm running a Blue System with the latest Beta-SW version. This one has a feature "ALERTS"  and "ACTION" where the system calls an URL or makes some noise depending on the set parameters.

So my idea for a future SW release is if there is enough free memory left to implement a feature which brings a notification to a mobile phone or tablet if an individual limit is exceeded.
For example I'm using a home automation system based on a open source platform using a Raspberry Pi (http://www.domoticz.com/) where the developers have implemented the option to trigger those notifications.
You need a personal API-key which has to be stored in the setup and an APP on the phone like from those:

Then depending on the settings a message will pop up on the phone if some value is exceeded even if the phone is in idle mode.

ich habe eines der letzten System Red Kits erstanden und nach einigen Verzögerungen habe ich mich im letzten Herbst/Winter endlich an das zusammenlöten gemacht. Ich habe davor schon einige kleinere Lötarbeiten gemacht, deshalb war ich optimistisch, dass ich es (wenn auch sehr langsam) hinbekomme. Auch hat meine Frau schonmal als Schülerjob gelötet, also dachte ich, dass wir das schaffen. Aber leider reicht meine Feinmotorik überhaupt nicht aus, es wird auch durch Übung nicht besser und die Löterfahrung meiner Frau beschränkt sich auf Stecker an Kabeln und ist leider auch überhaupt nicht vergleichbar (und auch 15 Jahre her). Das ganze ist also dann erstmal frustiert in einer Ecke des Schreibtischs gelandet.
Heute wollte ich endlich mal weiter machen, aber ich komme einfach auf keinen grünen Zweig. Vermutlich ist auch meine Ausrüstung unzureichend, aber als Anfänger, der in diesem Bereich auch nicht wirklich weitere Ambitionen hegt ist es da auch echt schwierig überhaupt zu wissen was man in welcher Variante und Qualität braucht. Der lokale Makerspace ist aus verschiedenen Gründen leider keine Option.
Wie gesagt, mit dem Löten geht es nicht voran, inzwischen habe ich Sorgen dass das Board und die Komponenten Schaden nehmen. Insbesondere den GPS-Chip habe ich vermutlich inzwischen schon zerstört.


Wer kann mir gegen einen Obolus das System Red zusammenlöten und ggf. beschädigte/verlorene/fehlende Komponenten ersetzen? 
Ich finde das System nach wie vor höchst faszinierend, muss mir aber eingestehen, dass ich eher eine Software-ä/Steckerzusammensteckperson bin. Und die Platinen/Bauteile sind eigentlich zu schade um in der Ecke zu verstauben.

Also, ich wäre bereit für den Zusammenbau (auf Hobbyniveau) und alle benötigten Komponenten und Verbrauchsstoffe zu zahlen.
Alternativ möchte mir vielleicht jemand ein ehrliches Angebot für die Trümmer meines System Red machen, damit ich mir ein System Blue (da ist wohl weniger zu löten und das was zu löten ist ist einfacher) kaufen kann.

Just tried to update my user data in the DB. Updates are taken in the user data form but not stored in the DB. After transmitting the updated form one gets back immediately the former unchanged data.

I have bought 3 off digital filter ICs but have one problem and a question.

E-Field Problem
When I select the LP filter on the E-field I just see loads of 50Hz noise.  Clearly there is an open circuit on the LP filter output, but I have been all round the chip and all connections are okay.  I am thinking it is further on in the circuit. 

Has anyone had this problem and could suggest where the open circuit might be? Alternatively I can trace the signal if I had a circuit and layout diagram.  I am an electronics engineer and have access to a full workshop with lots of test kit.

H-field question
I installed LP filters on H1 and H2, they are working great and set to 16kHz, they cut my noise from 60mV to 16mV.  However, I expected the thresholds to reduce, but they haven't, so whilst I have really low noise, I actually detect less signals as the signal peaks have been smoothed a little and now don't make the thresholds.

I am running in auto mode, should I be in manual and are there any suggested settings?

What is recommended to do in my case? Where to put the E-field antenna in my appartement? Would it be sufficient to put it behind a window?

Hi,
I have been looking at the U.S. density map for past years, and noticed that the Florida panhandle has a very low density of lightning strikes.
The gulf coast from Houston to west Florida, however, has some pretty high densities.

The station coverage looks better in the Florida peninsula than most of the area between Houston and west Florida.

So why does the Florida panhandle look so quiet 2015-2016?  Surely the panhandle has the highest actual lightning density on average, right?

I have two ferrite rods, one facing north south, the other facing east west.  The north south ferrite gets assigned gain of 800, the east west gets gain of 1600, noise is about the same. If I move the two antennas round by 90 degrees the gains on the amps swap so the new north south antenna still has the lower gain.

Do north south ferrites always have a lower gain, or is it some form of interference either to the north or south of my location which causes the higher noise/lower gain?

Would shielding the ferrites work?
