  PCB manufacturing for Blitzortung systems
Posted by: meteodelta - 2025-02-25, 10:47 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (8)

Dear experts !
Are you familiar with the following or similar PCB manufacturing ?
Is it good to try to manufacure a small batch of Red/Blue systems at this factory ?

https://www.pcbway.com/pcb-assembly.html

Since there is a long waiting list for regular boards, is this a possible speed-cutting solution
Providing of course parts and assembly has to be done elsewhere ?

Sincerely,

MD

  Blitzortung question
Posted by: dinogallardo - 2025-02-18, 04:34 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

Hello,
This morning I am sitting here watching the realtime lightningmaps.org screen covering most of the USA and Europe and noticed something that I've seen previously. I see many lightning strikes here in the US being detected by numerous European BO stations. The display shows the detecting stations and the connecting lines to the point of the strike. My question is why are the European stations detecting lightning all over the world while most of the US stations are only reporting lightning within the western hemisphere?

See the attached map and you'll immediately notice the high concentration of lines coming from Europe for strikes totally out of the range that I would expect to see. Is this a station setup issue or server algorithm that allows strike detection to show so far away from the detecting station?

Research suggests more lightning strikes will be occurring in North America

Research suggests more lightning strikes will be occurring in the mid-latitudes of North America.

There may also be an increase in overall burned areas due to wild fires.

  System Red for Sale
Posted by: broms99 - 2025-02-08, 19:54 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (6)

I have a system red for sale (System 673)  it is located in Cornwall (UK) but when I built it and set it up originally it was based in Ballyhaunis Southern Ireland.  I have since lost the email address it was registed with and cant change the location.  It is complete and working and will include an external GPS module and 2*FRA 200/15 antenna.  Would rather post to UK but will send to the EU.  Open to sensible offers.

  Documentation

The project documentation can be found here:

https://docs.lightningmaps.org

Since 2024 most of the information from different PDF files, Compendium, Wiki, forum threads are combined there.

If you think that some information should be added to the documentation then just use this thread here.

Contributing

The documentation is made with Mkdocs which is based on simple Markdown files. The source of the documentation consists of two git repositories which are available here:

https://gitlab.lightningmaps.org/common/docs
https://gitlab.lightningmaps.org/common/bo_files

It may also be cloned to github in the future or when someone requests it.

Interested in buying a detector and getting started
Posted by: benjaminrose1991 - 2025-01-12, 05:08 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Newbie here!

I've been interested in buying a detector and getting into lightning detection for a while now. I have a basic understanding of electronics and radio and I can do some ok solder jobs at a moment's notice.

I am located in Canberra, Australia and I would like to get two detectors online - one in a very northern suburb at my home and another in a more southern suburb with a family member.

Is there anyone here located in Australia or New Zealand who would be interested in selling a station?

I would also be interested in getting in touch with the owners of Canberra's two existing stations and gaining some knowledge and experience from them.

Many thanks!

  Something is gone wrong
Posted by: PetrosKa - 2024-12-29, 18:14 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (11)

Hello everyone and season greeting. Up to the 4th of December everything was running good for station 2916 since it was installed. I've done just about everything I know and what fund on the forum but the problem still stays. Good number on totals and valid but nothing on involved and used, manual mode. Thresholds around 110mv and noise around 45 to 48mv. My green station is running still good for over 10 years.
Regards
Petros

  Help understanding the maps
Posted by: ThunderDownUnder - 2024-12-23, 00:35 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Recently we had a strong storm front, mainly lightning with little rain. I grabbed a screenshot from lightningmaps.org for the last hour. A question has been raised on what the map actually shows, as to whether they are cloud to ground strikes, cloud to cloud, strikes or strokes.
I thought the grid total is for strikes, and strike locations may and often do include many strokes.
Appreciate any clarity we can get on this.
Thanks.
